The Legacy of the Workers' States: Class Compromise v. Class Struggle in Croatia
In this tripartite talk, the co-editor of “The Nineties. Short Cuts” (Devedesete. Kratki rezovi, ed. Obad, O. Bagarić, P., IEF & Jesenski i Turk, December 2019) presented research directions which have recently emerged in the study of the 1990s in Croatia, emphasizing the increased prominence of issues related to class and economic perspectives in general. Introduction was followed by the presentation of two chapters by the authors. The first one followed changes in “views of the firm” in the 1990s on the national level, arguing that this process was embedded within the larger societal context of the disintegration of class compromise, and directly affected by profound redefinition of ownership, management, stakeholder relationships and business models. The other focused on mass labor strikes in the imminent transition period of the year 1990, and particularly the experiences of the workers within the Borovo factory in Vukovar. It also argued for the importance of examining class struggles within the larger process of restoration of capitalism in the region and beyond.
