The English Passive: Students' Comprehension and Preferences
The passive voice is considered to be more complex in structure and thus more difficult to process, whereas the active voice is thought to guarantee precision and clarity of meaning. However, there is a variety of passive constructions that are widespread in use. The theoretical part discusses the reasons that led to the misidentification and disapproval of the passive voice. It also studies features of the English passive, provides an overview of common constructions labelled as passive and discusses the use and value of the passive voice. This paper delves into Croatian EFL students' perception of the English passive. The aim is to find out whether the students can identify different passive constructions and how their comprehension of the English passive affects their preferences, that is what motivates them to choose the passive over the active voice, and vice versa.
