In the last ten years, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek (FERIT) has grown into a respectable scientific institution and has become a scientific research center in the fields of biomedicine and biotechnology, electrical engineering, computing and automation, robotics, alternative energy sources as well as information and communication technologies. FERIT is making constant efforts to strengthen the staff structure and increase the scientific reputation, which is confirmed by a large number of projects and high quality of published scientific papers. During the past six years, as leaders or collaborators, FERIT scientists have participated in more than 50 scientific research and technological projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Education, Croatian Science Foundation, state institutions (Croatian Agency for SMEs, Innovations and Investments HAMAG-BICRO, Croatian Institute of Technology, HAKOM –Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries, etc.), European Union and various industry funds. The most significant projects, as well as their brief description, are presented below.Regarding biomedicine and biotechnology, there are projects with two main objectives -health analysis and improvement. These projects include research and development of segmentation and quantification software for processing and analysis of the cardiovascular system from CT and MRIimages as well as precise 3D reconstruction of the wound affected area of the human body with the help of a robot manipulator and modern 3D camera. The development and improvement of existing robot vision methods based on 3D sensors with an application inmobile robot manipulation and recognition of objects of interest and their parts in complex scenes can enable more efficient human-robot interaction that could highly contribute in various industry and biomedicine tasks. Moreover, the development and application of advanced building materials for the construction of healthy buildings with non-ionizing radiation protection and reduced EMP exposure increases public health, especially of the most vulnerable groups: children, pregnant women, patients and the elderly. The developments in the alternative energy sources are highlighted throughout the exploitation of the potential of renewable energies (RES) and energy efficiency (EE) in rural regions. This includes research of best practices of alternative financing models for EE/RES measures and the development of the calculator tool for municipal taxes and other income as well as the promotion of sustainable and efficient energy use in public buildings with high-energy demand by introducing RES-based energy-efficient smart Buildings Energy Management Systems (BEMS). Moreover, the reduction of the electricity cost to users in the building is achieved throughout the development of a networked stationary system for storing energy in batteries. This product is of great importance for the modern electric power systems as it enables the integration of a larger amount of renewable energy sources. Similarly, projects that are enforcing monitoring-management systems for key existing risks and environmental, biodiversity protection and smart electrical grid integration platform are included as well. The projects regarding information and communication technologies research are directed towards solving complex software and hardware demanding computations and simulations, including distribution grids and industrial drives. This also includes the use of internet-of-things (IoT) concepts and soft computing application in various real-life problems and is conducted in cooperation with the industry.
