Children with Dyslexia: Their Ability to Deal with Figurative Meaninig
The children ability to understand figurative meaning frequently expressed by different language means is a topic interesting both for normal language development and development of language impairments. Child's ability to deal with figurative meaning comprises its linguistic and cognitive skills. Led by this idea the study focused on ability to interpretate meanings of metaphors in a group of children with dyslexia has been conducted. In this paper will be presented data on the subgroup of children with dyslexia that showed poor results on language variables as well. Different language and reading tasks have been administered to that subgroup of children. Comparison of the two groups of children, subgroup of the children with dyslexia and children with normal language and reading development, has been done regarding their ability to understand different type of metaphors. The relation between comprehension of written language and figurative meaning will be discussed within the framework of normal vs. impaired language and reading development.
