N-SALICYLIDENE-3-PYRIDINECARBOHYDRAZIDE AS SPECTROFLUORIMETRIC REAGENT FOR Al(III)
Aluminium has been shown to be harmful for human beings when it is taken in excess. Accumulation of aluminium in the bone and brain tissue has been associated with a series of clinical disorders including encephalopathy, osteodystrophy and microtic anemia [1]. Therefore in most European countries the maximum aluminium concentration in drinking water and infusion fluids should not exceed 200 and 10 mg l-1, respectively. Consequently, the detection limit of analytical methods for aluminium determination in such samples must be lower. The reaction of N'-salicylidene-3-pyridinecarbohydrazide with Al(III) in the water/dioxane medium resulted in the formation of a fluorescent complex with excitation and emission maxima at 383 and 460 nm, respectively. The method developed by using this reaction featured a linear range of the dependence of the emission intensity on a concentration up to 40 mg l-1 Al(III). The detection limit was 2 mg l-1 Al(III). Good selectivity and repeatability were achieved.
