Introduction of Renewable Energy to Northwest of China Using the Clean Development Mechanism: Cases Studies of Lanzhou and Urumqi
Coal is the main component of the energy mix in China (70%). The utilization of coal is the main sources of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, and a source of other pollutants. This paper studies a city of Lanzhou, one of the most polluted cities in the world. Because Lanzhou relies on coal to generate almost 80% of its power, the energy sector contains perhaps the largest potential source of viable CDM projects. A successful case of renewable energy application in Urumqi, another big city in Northwest of China is reviewed. The results show that renewable energy technologies have great capacity to contribute to the sustainable development and vast technical potential to reduce GHG emissions, provide an assessment of the application of the CDM in northwest of China.
