Does language pathology really need normal language development studies
Language development studies have a long and well established history in "big" languages, such as for example English. Researchers and clinicians in those languages have access to large corpus data and number of instruments, developed and standardized. Situation is quite different in communities with small languages or communities which did not pay an adequate attention to language issues. On one side, there are no data and norms for language development and, on the other side, there are no sufficient number of instruments for screening and assesment of different target group of children. In this paper it will be discussed the importance of language development norms which frequently serve as starting and/or referent point in language clinical practice. Some pros and cons will be given for translation and adoption of valid instruments. And finally, some thoughts will be devoted how to get out of this vicious circle in which frequently speech and language pathologists find themselves.
