VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION AND SPECIATION OF TRACE METALS IN THE KRKA RIVER ESTUARY
The vertical water profile of trace metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) concentrations of the Krka river estuary was examined regarding their distribution of different species related to the halocline. The expected maximum in all trace metal concentrations as well as in copper complexing capacity occured at 3.8 ą 0.1 metres (E2 station, 1998.) and at 2.5 metres (E3 station, 1986.) where the haloclines appeared. The comparison between new results and results of twelve years ago was made and it was confirmed that trace metal concentrations as well as copper complexing capacities indeed give the maxima at the haloclines in the Krka river estuary. One of the possible explanations for the higher total trace metal concentrations in the mid layer could be greater residence time of falling down the water column terrigenic trace metals in the mid-layer due to the complexation with organic matter.
