The determination of dimethyl mercury in the sediment and sea water samples of Kaštela Bay (Eastern Adriatic Coast).
Highly volatile dimethylmercury (CH3)2Hg species was initially detected in sediments and seawater samples of the Kaštela Bay (Eastern Adriatic coast) in the vicinity of a chlor-alkali plant. The detection limits in seawater and sediment samples are 0.01 ng L-1 Me2Hg (450 ml volume of the water sample) and 0.002 ng g-1 Me2Hg (~ 7 g weight of the sediment sample), respectively. (CH3)2Hg was found only in a very restricted area (of about 300 m2) of the Kaštela Bay, in the concentration range between 0.003 and 0.150 ng g-1 sediment, and 0.02-0.120 ng L-1 seawater.
