Amphitropic Behavior of Cholate Salts
The monovalent and divalent cholate salts are both mesogen and an amphiphile. This combination of both molecular prerequisites permits the formation of a thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystalline phase. The mesomorphic properties have been studied using optical micrscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The lyotropic liquid crystalline phase formation is induced by pH and concentration increasing. The heating scan of solid crystalline phase exhibited several exothermic transition ranging from 300 to 600 K. The observed mesophases belong to the smectic phases. The enthalpy of each phase transition was determined.
