Environmental Databases Design

Multidisciplinary projects on investigation of natural environment often involve different institutions and sometimes different countries. Specialised IS (Information Systems) need to be developed to enable efficient management of such complex and multidimensional data collected during these projects. It is necessary to choose the appropriate modern approach for IS developoing process by applying modern technology. The conceptual data model should be well designed, documented and independent of existing hardware and software. The process of "good" database design is illustrated on the example of IS about Investigations of the Adriatic See. The most important goals of such multidisciplinary projects are data collection and their exchange and interpretation in order to enable the efficient decision making in the management of environment. Autodesk products which enable developing of dynamic WWW (World Wide Web) applications are serving for this purpose. The main principle is to access relational databases via vector-based maps using CGI (Common Getaway Interface) scripts. These databases are resident either locally on the Web site under existing RDBMS (Relational DataBase Management System) or distributed around the network. The use of such technology is illustrated on the example of monitoring stations for Croatia inside EPDRB (Environmental Programme for Danube River Basin).
