Toward the optimum control of eutrophication in the Izmit Bay
Majority of total suspended solids (TSS) in the bay does not originate directly from land based sources but represents phytoplankton. Hence, the control of TSS reduces to the control of eutrophication. It has been found earlier that the nutrient which limits phytoplankton growth is the natural supply of silica. Therefore, unless the reduction of phosphorus and nitrogen are significant, water quality will not improve. The optimum reduction is a distributed function. To find this function a high resolution 3 + 1 dimensional ecological model needs to be run for the eastern part of the bay.
