Dual Fuel Combustion as a Way of Increasing Sustainability of Power Production
In recent years possibility of simultaneous combustion of different kinds of fuel has gained an increased attention regarding ecological aspects. By using the combination of heavy fuel oil and natural gas the pollutant emissions could conform to the ecological norms in force. A second issue of using dual fuels in power plants is of economical importance regarding the prices and availability of supply of different fuels. The model that describes dual fuel combustion is based on the probability density function formulation (PDF). The main difference from the “ classical” PDF model suited for the system comprising one fuel and one oxidizer is in addition of the second fuel. Analysis was conducted for a steam generator of the 210 MW Power Plant Sisak (Croatia). Five different burner configurations were investigated for each of the three steam generator operational modes. In the basic configuration all four burners were fed with the heavy fuel oil, what corresponded to the highest emissions of CO2, SO2, NOx and soot. By replacing the heavy fuel oil on some burners with the natural gas the pollutant emissions decreased.
