Analysis Of Dual Firing Capabilities Of Retrofitted Power Plant

Capability to burn two different fuels does not give only emergency backup possibility but it is also a measure to respond to variations in fuel prices and therefore represents a way to optimize fuel costs. Fuel diversification allows power plant management to set the best plant operation strategy. The other aspect of dual firing is ecological. Switching from oil to gas or using their combination reduces the pollutant emissions conforming them to the ecological norms in force and minimizes plant emission costs. Combustion of two different types of fuel, alone or combined in certain proportion changes the thermal and aerodynamic conditions in the furnace in comparison to firing only oil fuel. Therefore a modelling analysis was carried out in order to establish regions of safe and efficient boiler operation. The simultaneous combustion of heavy fuel oil and natural gas was described by the modified PDF model comprising one primary fuel, one secondary fuel and one oxidizer mixture fraction. Analysis was conducted for a retrofitted steam generator of the 210 MW Power Plant Sisak (Croatia). Five different burner configurations were investigated for each of the three steam generator operational modes (50%, 75% and 100% of load). In the basic configuration all four burners were fed with the heavy fuel oil, what corresponded to the highest emissions of CO2, SO2, NOx and soot. By replacing the fuel of one or more of the burners with the natural gas the pollutant emissions decreased.
