The costs of implementing the Aarhus Convention in Croatia
Active participation of the public in creation and implementation of the environmental protection policy is a precondition for the realization of sustainable development. Croatia recognised this problem and even signed the Aarhus Convention in 1998, but has not ratified it so far. The article shows the possibilites offered by the Aarhus Convention in the field of democratisation of the environmental protection. The results of the analysis of the availability of the environmental information in the Republic of Croatia are presented and it has been found out that there was a significant gap in the level of necessary information. The main purpose of this article is to show the calculation of costs and benefits of ratifying the Aarhus Convention by the Republic of Croatia. Conclusions and recommendations for political environmental decision-makes are given at the end of the article, related to the necessity to make the environmental information available to the wider public.
