Changes in nutrition, growth and nutritional status of two rural schoolchildren populations in the twenty year period

Over the past decades changes in food consumption pattern, nutritional status and secular growth trend in school age population are observed. In this paper we compare the results of nutrition surveys performed 1975 and 1995 year in two different geographical regions, Hrvatsko zagorje and Dalmatinska zagora. Nutritional surveys in rural school population aged 7-14 years included anthrometric measurements, clinical examinations and food consumption surveys (24 hour recall) . The results from 1995 indicate that all age groups are taller and heavier than their peers in 1975 year. The most pronanunced secular trend in growth (7-9.6 cm) is evident in groupd of 10-13 year old girls, and 13-14 year old boys in both regions. comparison of populations from those two regions in 1995. year show that almost all age groups of girls in Dalmatinska zagora are significantly taller and slimer than in Hrvatsko zagorje. In a period of twenty years in both regions socio economic situation has changed positively, nutrition is improved, so only a few percent of children have clinical signs of some light or moderate nutritional deficit. Mean daily energy intake in 1995 year is 10-15 percent higher that twenty years before. Intake of almost all nutrients is higher, so is nutritive density.
