Estimation of the Effective Throughput in 802.11b WLAN Networks

Reliable model of the attainable throughput in IEEE 802.11b WLAN is needed to facilitate capacity planning and network deployment. In this paper an approximate analytical formula for calculating effective throughput of 802.11b devices, as a function of the number of competing stations for different sizes of transmitted packets has been proposed. Using this formula WLAN network administrator can estimate the throughput capacity of single access point (AP) shared between multiple wireless stations with sufficient accuracy. The proposed method has been evaluated by experimental results.
