Cultural industries in Southeastern Europe (SEE): Overview of key areas and problems

When discussing the urban regeneration in the last decade or so, one is usually talking about the influence of cultural/creative industries, that is, one is talking about using culture as a push in regional and local development. In this way this presentation will try to give an overview assessment of cultural industries in countries of Southeastern Europe. One has to stress that it will not present the financial assessment of the impact of the cultural industries toward urban development, but it will try to show some key problems arising in the cultural industries of SEE. In presenting these problems, the position on the role of cultural policies towards cultural industries will be made as well. The aim of this presentation is to open a debate on how to bridge these problems of cultural industries, and in this way to tackle the interaction of cultural industries and urban development in the context of transition processes of SEE countries.
