Bridge Management Systems

Many countries around the world are currently facing increasing demands on their resources for the maintenance of existing bridges. Faced with limited resources, the authorities have to prioritise the work. Computerized bridge management systems are used to assist in this process. But, it is important to recognize that a bridge management system is not just a computer program. It also comprises a set of standards addressing all activities throughout the life of a bridge and prescribing procedures for bridge inspection, assessment and maintenance. The paper describes principles of bridge management and bridge management systems, analyzes the application of bridge management systems worldwide and discusses bridge management in Croatia. Systematic approach in planning and execution of bridge maintenance activities is essential for efficient bridge management, thus assuring bridge safety and serviceability throughout the anticipated service-life, while minimizing the associated costs. Many countries have developed some sort of computerized bridge management system to assist in deceison making processes related to various activities of bridge management. Still, further research is necessary to include structural deterioration modeling and load-carrying capacity assessment in existing bridge management systems.Poor in-service performance and condition of existing bridges in Croatia, leads to the conclusion that currently employed approach to solving bridge maintenance issues is not satisfactory, and should be improved taking into account experience of other countries and results of most recent research. Ultimately, it should be possible to combine management systems for pavements, earthworks and all highway structures – bridges, culverts, retaining walls and tunnels, to develop a route management system.
