NEW BRIDGES IN CROATIA
The total number of bridges on highway and trunk roads in Croatia amounts to roughly 3000. Among these the most notable is a group of world-renowned reinforced concrete arch bridges, with the record-breaking Krk bridge as its crown achievement. Continuing this rich bridge engineering heritage, there are currently in Croatia several exception bridge structures under construction or at various stages of the design process. The paper delivers the most distinctive features of a series of attractive bridges – the asymmetrical single-tower cable-stayed Dubrovnik bridge with the main span of 244 m, the 204-m span reinforced concrete arch Skradin bridge over Krka river canyon, extradosed prestressed concrete Domovinski bridge with the main span of 120 m, currently under construction at the Croatia’ s capital, and finally, the plans for 2.3-km long Pelješac crossing. The fixed link to Pelješac peninsula is already due to its length, the greatest engineering undertaking not only in Croatia, but in the whole of Europe. The paper discusses careful proportioning of design parameters to ensure the pleasing overall impression of the structure and fitting in the environment, as well as satisfactory durability performance over the anticipated service life.
