Food Retailing in Central Europe: A Case Study of Traditional and Modern Grocery Retailing in Croatia
This research focuses on the highly competitive market that food retailers face in Croatia. The central problem addressed is an identification of the factors, external and internal, that have the greatest impact on performance. Drawing on primary research surveys of retail managers and consumers, this paper contributes to the ongoing research in this field with an in-depth analysis of success/failure factors. Special focus is on the new store formats that have been introduced in Croatia. Traditional food retailing strategies still hold appeal to some consumer segments, but competition increases pressure on all firms’ margins and many companies are modernising to reduce costs and attract more consumers.
