Span Length Optimisation in Design of the Concrete Box Girder Bridges
Using Visual Basic (v.6.0) programming structures, a group of computer algorithms has been built for computing main bearing parts of the bridge starting from the superstructure to the foundations dependent on the span length. The expressions the program uses for dimensioning are engineer empirical values obtained by assessment of the previous projects. For each of the spans, values of element dimensions are obtained and used to calculate material consumption and ultimately its cost. For a fixed group of input variables one span can be then adopted as the optimal one with the minimal cost. The structural type for this analysis is concrete box girder with constant or variable height depending on the span length. If one of the input variables is changeable one can see its influence on the optimal values.
