Optimization of Design and Construction of Bridges Made of Precast Elements
In recent years Croatia made plans for building more than 1500 kilometres of highway. Only last year almost 200 kilometers of new highway was opened, primarily in direction of southern Croatia. By the end of this year another 150 kilometres of highways will be constructed and until year 2008 another 450 kilometres. This will complete the highway network in Croatia. Civil Engineering Institute of Croatia along with Faculty of Civil Engineering from Zagreb, were and still are the main designers and supervision engineers in Croatian Motorway Project. As such the client, Croatian Road Authority, asked us to optimise design and construction of structures on this motorway project. The analysis was made based on experience of prior designs and construction of similar structures, taking into account common ground conditions, technology and economic aspects. One span simple supported grid-work was contemplated. We considered two structural layouts. One with cross girders only at supports and the other with cross girders at supports and in the span middle. The loads (permanent and movable) implemented in analysis were one the most used in design practice in Croatia such as: Croatian regulations ; DIN (German regulations) and Eurocode.
