Health Monitoring of Large Adriatic Bridges

Systematic approach to bridge management and maintenance planning becomes essential as costs of preserving safety and serviceability of structures start to prevail over new investments. Bridge management systems are developed for this purpose. These are well suited to data collection and analysis on network level. However, the project level bridge management, particularly regarding large and significant bridges, requires bridge-specific maintenance pro-gramme. Six large reinforced concrete arch bridges were built along Croatian Adriatic coast over the last four decades – Šibenik Bridge, Pag Bridge, Krk Bridges (Krk I and Krk II Bridges), Maslenica Bridge and Skradin Bridge across Krka river canyon. The performance in service of four older arch bridges – Šibenik, Pag, Krk I and Krk II Bridges, cannot be deemed satisfactory. Unfortunately, monitoring the bridges’ performance was not continuous activity, but was carried out on the “ as-needed” basis with inspection and testing undertaken only when structural damage was visible and urgent repairs were needed. Markov chain model was applied in a failed attempt to predict future degradation and estimate remaining service life of the bridges. That model failed since the inspections were not performed regularly. This paper pre-sents the development and application of new monitoring model to large Adriatic coast bridges.
