Intrauterine growth retardation : medical problem only?

Developmental studies have shown a broad range of outcomes in infants with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) ; ranging from normal to small decreases in cognitive and language abilities to a sharply increased risk of cerebral palsy. The study is designed to explore neurodevelopmental, cognitive and language development outcome in children with IUGR. 15 children aged four to seven with IUGR are assessed. Neurological functioning was examined by the method of Touwen and classified in three categories ; methods of psychological and language development evaluation included number of different tests/subtests (WPPSI-III, PPVT, ITPA, Token test) and memory (2 subtests) and phonological tasks (4 tasks). At preschool age one child showed normal neurological status, 11 children had minor neurological deficit and two children showed cerebral palsy. Most children obtained results within average limits on cognitive and linguistic tests, but a small number of children have less satisfying results, which can probably be explained by different etiology of IUGR, or some other medical complications. When looking at single subtests, more heterogeneus results can be observed which leads to conclusion that a different approach is needed – one in which, other than gross measures in developmental follow-up, more subtle measures should be included.
