COMPARISON OF NO2 CONCENTRATIONS AND CONCENTRATIONS OF LEAD, MANGANESE AND CADMIUM IN PM10 IN ZAGREB AIR

Concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and metals lead, manganese and cadmium in PM10 particle fraction (particles with aerodynamic equivalent diameter less than 10 &micro ; m) were measured over a year at two measuring sites in Zagreb. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between traffic-related pollution and heavy metal content in PM10. For that reason NO2 levels and levels of Pb, Mn and Cd in PM10, were measured at two sites with different traffic density. Measuring sites were located in the northern residential part of Zagreb with a modest traffic density and in the city center which is a high traffic-density area. In the city center, NO2 concentrations were measured using automatic device based on chemiluminescence. In the northern part of Zagreb, NO2 measurements were performed by passive sampling on filter papers impregnated with triethanolamine solution. After extraction, NO2 concentration was determined spectrophotometrically. Particle mass concentrations were determined gravimetrically, and Pb, Mn and Cd by atomic absorption spectrometry. The results show that NO2 and Mn concentrations in PM10 were higher in the city center than in the northern part of the town over the whole measuring period. Concentrations of Pb and Cd in PM10 were low and comparable at both measuring sites. Statistically significant (p<0.001) and high correlations were found between the concentrations of NO2 and Mn, and Mn and Pb at both sites (correlation coefficients between 0.500 and 0.630). The results further indicate that lead content in PM10 is less associated with traffic pollution, probably as a result of Pb reduction in fuels. Cadmium content in PM10 was very low during the whole year (often below the detection limits) so the obtained correlations must be taken with caution. Manganese in PM10 correlate well with NO2, which leads to the conclusion that both pollutants originated from the same source.
