Development of Croatian Road Transport Infrastructure
Over the last decades Croatia made large investments in order to improve road transport infrastructure. This huge project started with the long-term development programme of the Croatian road network and the author of this paper was chairman of the special committee appointed to develop Croatian Road Network Development Strategy. The Strategy was adopted by Croatian Government in 1996 and Croatian Parliament in 1999. It defined major routes for motorway and high speed road network and proposed completion schedule. Subsequently, the construction gained speed and the established public road management system proved to be very efficient. The total length of motorways currently operated in Croatia amounts to 1020 km, half of which were constructed over the past 5 years. Further works comprise extension of motorway network, as well as rehabilitation of older sections. Development of motorway network requires construction of a large number of structures, with large-span bridges and long tunnels being the most complex and most expensive.
