Structure and Dynamics of Vesicles from Symmetrical Double Chain Alkylbenzenesulphonates
Symmetrical double-chain sodium 1-(7)-tridecylbenzenesulphonate (7STBS) was prepared by conventional methods from reagent-grade starting materials. Using surface tension measurements two critical concentrations, c.m.c1 and c.m.c.2, were determined in the binary 7-tridecylbenzenesulphonate/water system at different temperatures. In the more concentrated system, 5-10% of surfactant, multilamellar vesicles were observed. Dynamic light scattering of freshly prepared as well as the aged systems showed an increase in particle diameter by aging. In addition, it was also shown that in aged systems the formation of multilamellar vesicles occurs in the systems with lower surfactant content than in freshly prepared ones.
