Building Highway Network in Croatia
Over the last decades Croatia made large investments in order to complete the 1500 km long highway network. Long-term development programme of the Croatian road network was outlined in Road Network Development Strategy developed in mid 1990’ s. It defined major routes for highway and high speed road network and proposed completion schedule. Subsequently, the construction gained speed and the established public road management system proved to be very efficient. The total length of highways and semi-highways currently operated in Croatia amounts to 1019 km, half of which were constructed over the past 5 years. Further works comprise extension of highway network, as rehabilitation of older sections. Development of highway network required construction of a large number of structures, with large-span bridges and long tunnels being the most complex and most expensive.
