Environmental Protection in Croatia
Environmental protection and conservation are the basis of modern planning and of sustainable natural and constructed resources management in the future at global level. The Republic of Croatia has recognized and accepted this concept as the path to development, especially because of its diverse natural richness which has traditionally been used for economic development. The war and transition process in Croatia in the period from 1990 to 1997 resulted in significant reduction of industrial production and tourist activities. Furthermore, the occurrence of intense migration, especially emigration resulted with total desertion of certain areas. These trends reduced the human impact on environment, but have caused other kinds of pollution with long-term consequences, like mining of woods and pastures, destruction of forests due to war mechanisation, etc. Due to various activities at national and local levels which are aimed to intensify entrepreneurship and accelerate economic growth and development, there is a danger that future growth will resutl in deterioration of natural resources, which opposes the basic endeavour for sustainable development and protection and conservation of Croatia's natural beauty. Therefore, numerous activities are undertaken to indtroduce legal measures, standards and institutional strengthening, wich are in line with the existing regulations of the European Union.
