Influence of quercetin on Cucumber mosaic virus in zucchini

Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), one of the most significant plant pathogens, presents highly important problem in plant production due to inefficiency of measures for virus control. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of flavonoid quercetin (Q) on virus replication, leaf pigments concentrations and weight of the leaves (LW) of CMV infected zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) plants. Quercetin was added to virus inocula (simultaneous application) at 63, 125 or 250 mM or infected plants were treated once a day (repeated application) with 250 mM during 14 days post inoculation (DPI). The experiments were performed in growth chamber and greenhouse. Samples were taken 3, 5, 8, 11 and 14 DPI. Simultaneous application of 63 and 125 mM Q increased concentration of virus 10-85% (3, 5, 11, 14 DPI) and 63-93% (3, 5, 8 DPI), respectively. At the same conditions, 250 mM Q reduced CMV concentrations (16-52%) in plants grown in chamber up to 11 D, but there was no effect on plants grown in greenhouse except at 11 DPI. Repeated application reduced CMV concentration (22-59%) in chamber up to 11 D, whereas in greenhouse CMV was reduced (51%) only at 8 DPI. Application of 63 and 125 mM Q enhanced LW up to 5 and 11 DPI, respectively. Concentration of leaf pigments (chla, chlb and carotenoids) was generally increased up to 11 DPI by simultaneous application of 63, 125 and 250 mM Q. Effect of quercetin on CMV depends on applied concentration and duration of treatment.
