Electrophysiological Evidence for Sentence Comprehension: A Comparison of Adult, Normal Developing Children and Children with Specific Language Impairment
Electrophysiological traces of processes related to sentence comprehension are identified in terms of characteristic ERP components. The differences in the obtained ERP components correspond to the theoretical distinctions of various aspects of grammar according to the Role and Reference Grammar. In particular, different components are identified for processing that is related to constituent projection in RRG and to the operator projection. Various aspects of syntax are thus dissociated electrophyisiologically. Although this dissociation is present in typically developing children, it is absent in children with Specific Language Impairment.
