Religion and Social Capital: the Diversity of European Regions
In the paper the authors argue that religious beliefs and religious participation may encourage the creation of social capital and reinforce bonds within society. To measure religious diversity in Europe and its impact on civic participation they used an empirical analysis based on the European Value Survey and European Social survey data. They proved that Church attendance influences the associational aspect of social capital much more than individual religiousness does. Religious voluntary organizations appear to have even stronger influence on associational aspects. However, there is a vide diversity across Europe, what is shown in an analysis on five religious / cultural European regions.
