Use of the mother tongue in the foreign language classroom
As foreign language learning became more and more popular in the twentieth century, the issue whether to use the monolingual or the bilingual approach to the learning process also became more important. For many years, the monolingual approach was considered more efficient and therefore preferred, but towards the end of the century the situation changed. Today the bilingual approach is more popular and, if used in a proper way, it can facilitate the learning process. This paper gives an overview of the theory and research on the bilingual approach. It also describes the study in which we investigated the amount and function of Croatian (as L1) in the English language (L2) classroom.
