The occurrence of potentially toxic Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha in the costal waters of the Northern Adriatic Sea

Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha Lundhum, Hasle et Moestrup, was determined after a revision of morphologically similar species to P. pseudodeliicatissima and P. cuspidata (Hasle) emend. Lundholm, Hasle et Moestrup. Investigations of species proliferation has generated considerable scientific interest since it is probably cosmopolitan species, present in both cold and warm waters, associated with the production of domoic acid, a neurotoxic amino acid responsible for Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). In the Adriatic Sea it was discovered for the first time in samples from the Gulf of Trieste and Kaštela Bay. In the southern part along the western Adriatic coast, as well as in the eastern Middle Adriatic, Novigrad Sea, previous research described species population dynamics in relation to physical and chemical variables. We present the first detailed taxonomic study of this species in the Northern Adriatic in relation to environmental conditions. The sampling was carried out on seven stations in the summer/autumn 2007 and it was found that P. calliantha largely dominated phytoplankton community. This type of research elucidating nutrient and physical requirements, as well as biotic interactions of Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha at regional and global scales, is essential for the prediction and prevention of its mass occurrence and potential toxicity. Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha could be found on seven sample stations throughout the northern Adriatic as the dominant diatom species in summer and autumn 2007, extending the geographical range of the species. The morphometric data retrieved from those samples show the need to increase the so far known limits in literature. Morphometric differences detected within the northern Adriatic samples could so far not be correlated with ecological differences, indicating the need for a more comprehensive and elaborate data set on chemical and morphometric in situ data. The abundance of P. calliantha was highest in late summer and autumn. This was correlated with or preceded by an increase of chlorophyll a and a simultaneous decrease in ammonia, silicate and phosphate concentrations. As the highest abundance occurred after late summer, this event was also preceded by a decrease in temperature and salinity.
