The Diversity of Women´s Experiences : The Conception and the Realisation of Gender in the Bosniac, Muslim and Pentecostal Communities in Sisak
This paper aims to reaffirm the importance of transcending the monovocality of a universalistic approach to gender issues both through methodological and theoretical framework of analyses by examining the experiences and identities of a group of Bosniac, Muslim and Pentecostal women in Sisak, Croatia. By considering the ideals of masculinity and femininity and the values inherent to gender roles as well as specific manifestations in very personal scenes from everyday life of the Bosnic, Muslim and Pentecostal women, the text attempts to portray the interlocking dimensions of ethnicity, religion and gender. One of the core questions dealt with in the paper is whether the traditional family, with its traditional gender roles of a man as a financial provider and a women as a care-provider still exists, and if so to what extent and in which ways has it adjusted itself to the changes in the labor market, family life and society as a whole. The specific interpretations of the research participants thus add another, small, but important pieces of the collage of women’ s experiences and the conception and realization of gender roles in Europe.
