Reevaluation of IDD control programme in Croatia : analysis of TSH levels in newborns

IDD control intervention programme in Croatia is conducted since the beginning of nineties. After epidemiological and biochemical assessment indicated the presence of mild to moderate goiter prevalence, it has been decided to increase iodine level in all salt intended for human consumption and animal feed from previous 10 mg/1kg +/-5 to 25 +/-5 mg of KI per kg of salt. One of the basic purposes of IDD surveillance is to determine the magnitude and distribution of IDD within a population. Besides epidemiological criteria for assessing the size of IDD problems on the basis of goiter prevalence in the schoolchild population and urinary iodine excretion, important public health iodine deficiency indicator is the level of TSH in full blood of newborns. TSH levels obtained from newborns were compared to the cut-off points that are considered indicative of potential public health problems in regard to the severity of IDD. According to the criteria regarding public health significance of IDD based on the prevalence of elevated TSH levels obtained from the whole blood from newborns, data indicate that Croatia in general could be classified as a country having the presence of mild to moderate IDD problem.
