Batch cultivation of Thiosphaera pantotropha
Thiosphaera pantotropha is a facultative chemolitotrophic sulphide oxidizing bacterium. It is known of being capable of aerobic heterotrophic nitrification and both aerobic and anaerobic denitrification if a suitable electron donor (e.g. acetate) is available. This means that, under fully aerobic conditions, this organism converts ammonia into nitrogen gas, which makes it suitable for ammonia removal from waste water in a process which does not require anoxic phase. Most of the studies done on this microorganism so far were done in conditions of carbon limitation. As a consequence, low concentrations of carbon source were used yielding low biomass concentrations. In this work we tried to develop culture conditions to obtain higher concentrations of Thiosphaera pantotropha both in aerobic and anaerobic cultivation. The influences of culturing techniques on yields and growth rates will be discussed.
