Cross-Dimerization of Nitrosobenzenes
Nitrosobenzenes can exist as blue or green monomers or as colorless azodioxy dimers in two forms, (Z) and (E). Nevertheless, most of them exist as dimers in the solid state. It is well known that in solution monomer-dimer equilibrium is established. At ambient temperatures the main solution species are monomers irrespective of the nature of the solid-state form of the nitroso compound. Decreasing temperature favours the dimeric azodioxy species with both (Z)- and (E)-forms present in addition to the monomer. The main goal of this work is to answer the question about the possibility of formation of cross-linked dimers (heterodimers) in case when they are not sterically crowded with large groups in ortho-position. The formation of heterodimers was studied on the mixed system of p-bromo- and p-nitronitrosobenzene by low temperature 1H, 13C and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The equimolar solution of p-bromonitrosobenzene and p-nitronitrosobenzene in CDCl3 cooled to -55 ºC afforded NMR spectra which were different from the sum of spectra recorded for the solutions of individual components under the same conditions. Accordingly, p-bromonitrosobenzene and p-nitronitrosobenzene form the corresponding heterodimer in solution even though they are not sterically crowded with large groups in ortho-position what was previously stated as necessary condition for cross-linking into heterodimers.
