The endocrine control of the female reproductive system is complex and it involves a wide variety of hormones and neuroendocrine factors that interrelate to effect the successful production of mature gametes. Any fluctuation in those delicately balanced processes can have far ranging consequences on the whole system. A number of agents appear to have similar or synergistic functions. Exogenous compounds, such as pesticides, interfere with the biochemical processes and influence the gonadotropic mechanism. Atrazine has been shown to be responsible for serious failures involved in reproduction. Disturbances in hypothalamo- pituitary function result among others in disorders of reproductive function and metabolism. These disturbances could apparently, after some time, produce some reversible or irreversible damages. Gonadoliberin (GnRH) has inhibited metabolism of (4-14C)-progesterone in anterior pituitary of control and ovariectomized rats. This inhibition is in correlation with an increase of LH and FSH at the same time. Atrazine treatment has an opposite influence and it reduces LH and FSH secretion within pituitary, and at the same time increases activity of 5alpha-reductase and 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. We can conclude that gonadoliberin can restore possible negative influence of atrazine.
