Diet quality and grains intake in Croatian pregnant women
Pregnancy is a critical period during which good maternal nutrition is a key factor influencing the health of both mother and child. The objective of this study was to estimate nutrient intake and diet quality during pregnancy, in particular grains intake. Subjects were 104 pregnant women, aged 20 to 40 years. Dietary assessment methods used was 3-day dietary record. Energy and fibers intake were below the recommended intakes, as well as intakes of vitamin A and E, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium zinc and potassium. Participants consumed on average 6.3 servings of grains daily, and only 14.4% of participants have met recommendations. Bread contributed the most in grains intake, with 4.4 servings daily, but consumption of whole grain bread was established in only 4.6% of subjects. Low intake of certain micronutrients is concerning, but also very low intake of whole grain breads. Additional research should be done to identify cause of existing dietary pattern.
