Application of Graphical Software in Teaching of Microeconomics
In this paper authors tried to show how e-learning techniques can be used in the teaching of Microeconomics, lecture Cournot Duopoly. Only simple software is used in order to maintain simplicity and at the same time to show all the main concepts that needed to be covered in this particular lecture. It is especially useful for faculties and business schools where students are not at the same level of the background knowledge of calculus. The approach presented here offers a method for teaching this lecture while keeping comprehension level and attention of majority of the students. Using these programmes teacher can interactively draw graphs of Cournot model (reaction curves and equilibrium points) and comparable models, gradually adding curves and then showing how equilibrium changes when assumptions of the model change. These changes would show crucial relations between concepts of reaction curves, equilibrium point, function differentialand layer curves (contours of the profit functions, isoprofit curves). Authors used Graph 4.3 and Mathematica 5.2 software. Finally it is shown how graphical software can be used for switching between different types of graphs representing the same model, but from the other point of view. In this manner lecture is transformed into an interesting teaching experience for both the teacher and the students.
