Comparison of movement related evoked potentials in Parkinson's disease patients and healthy controls
The aim of the study was to demonstrate a possibility of application of movement related evoked potentials (MREP) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) diagnostics. In the experiment participants were instructed to carry out a series of repetitive spontaneous thumb movements with a time interval of 5-10 s. The two groups of participants were PD patients and healthy controls. For patients with PD a shift in a latency of a beginning of MREP, the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), was observed. The BP started earlier for healthy controls than for PD patients when a PD patients’ affected hand movement was observed. The BP latency shift was not observed for PD patients’ healthy hand. Later components of MREP were not significantly influenced by the disease. The PD patients group was diverse and in accordance with that standard deviations of MREP components’ amplitudes for this group was much greater that for the controls group. Results show that there is an evident difference between MREP in PD patients group and in healthy controls group. Further investigation is needed in order to infer whether the BP latency shift correlates with a severity of the disease.
