Copper(II) ion selective electrode based on 1, 2- di-(o-salicylaldiminophenylthio)ethane

1, 2-di-(o-salicylaldiminophenylthio)ethane was synthesized and used as ion carrier in the fabrication of copper(II) ion selective PVC membrane electrodes. Influence of different component ratio, and different plasticizer were study for obtaining a sensor with optimal response characteristic for determination of copper(II) in water sample in wide pH range. The best performances are obtained by a membrane electrode having o-NPOE as plasticizer and and NaTBP as anionic additive (1/2 mole ratio in respect to ion carrier). This electrode shows a linear potential response to copper(II) in concentration range 9×10-7 - 1×10-2 moldm-3, with Nernstian slope of 29.5 mV/decade and detection limit down to 5×10-7 moldm-3. It is suitable for copper(II) determinations within pH between 3.5 and 7.3, and work well over a period of 2 months. The potentiometric selectivity coefficient value ( ) as determinated by fixed interference method indicate excellent selectivity for Cu2+ ions over interfering cations. There were no noticed any interference by chlorides and other examined anions. Described membrane electrode can be used in analytical measurements by direct potentiometry as well in potentiometric titration.
