Synthesis and characterization of monodentate pseudopeptide ligands with nitrogen or phosphorus donor atoms
In recent years, supramolecular enantioselective catalysis is receiving growing attention. It has been postulated that a supramolecular enantioselective catalyst should contain (i) a functional group for the catalysis and (ii) a motif for the assembly process via non-covalent interactions, i.e. π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic or van der Waals interactions. Supramolecular catalysis is particularly attractive because it often uses only simple monodentate ligands, easily accessible in a few synthetic steps. In this work, we present the synthesis and characterization of chiral monodentate amino acid substituted ligands L1 - L3, potentially applicable in supramolecular enantioselective catalysis. The nitrogen or phosphorus donor atoms in L1 - L3 can bind to late transition metals like Rh(I), Pd(II) or Cu(I). In the resulting ML2 complexes, the pedant amino acid substituents can form intra-molecular hydrogen bonds, while the central aromatic units can exhibit π-π stacking. A second amino acid substituent in L3 or longer amino acid chains can allow stronger supramolecular interactions. The prepared ligands are characterized by various spectroscopic methods including 1H - and 13C-NMR, MS, IR, UV/VIS and CD.
