Spiroindolinobenzopyrans represent one of the five chemical classes of compounds, which satisfy the ideal properties of organic photochromic compounds. Photochromism implies to a reversible change in colour of the substrates caused by an outside stimulus, usually UV. Ideally, a photochromic compound should develop a strong colour rapidly upon irradiation with UV, the fate rate back to the colourless state should be controllable, the range of colours should be well within the visible spectrum, life longevity should ensure many colouration cycles and the rest sate of the matter should be preferably colourless [1]. In this paper spectral properties of photochromic compound 1′, 3′-Dihydro-8-methoxy-1′, 3′, 3′-trimethyl-6-nitrospiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2, 2′-(2H)-indole] spiroindolinobenzopyran under influence of solvents of different polarity were investigated (ethyl acetate, acetone). Dispersions of different compound concentrations were exposed to UV-A, UV-B and combined UV-A/UV-B source of light in order to determine behaviour of prepared solutions to different irradiation wavelengths. Results confirmed correlation between compound concentration and obtained absorption values (A), while polarity of the solvents influenced max insignificantly. Correlation between compound concentrations and photochromic response of dispersions was reported.
