Resource Efficient Concrete in Practice - Performance Based Design of Concrete for Peljesac Bridge

Durability of concrete is determined by its ability to resist the physical and environmental influences without losing the functional properties and structural integrity of the original design. This paper presents part of the performance-based durability design of Pelješac bridge, based on testing results performed on concrete containing slag and high volume of fly ash. The new Pelješac bridge will be a 2, 374-meter long, 55-meter high beam and cable-stayed bridge, with a main span of 568 metres, which makes it second largest in Europe. This bridge will be situated in a very harsh marine environment, which sets up very strict requirements for concrete regarding durability properties. Within this research series of concrete mixtures are investigated, with up to 30% of fly ash and 20% of slag as cement clinker substitution. Concrete properties were investigated in fresh and hardened state, with the emphasis on durability properties such as: porosity, capillary absorption, water and gas permeability, chloride diffusion, freezing/thawing resistance. Substituting 50% of cement clinker content in the concrete mix with mineral admixtures, concrete industry is saving natural resources and significantly contributing to the sustainability of construction, but it is necessary to satisfy also all durability requirements of the high performance concrete constructions. In this paper results of the research performed on concrete mixtures with high volume of fly ash and slag are presented, with the aim of proving that is possible to build more durable structures and contribute as well to the construction sustainability.
