Association of dietary and life style habits with body composition in pre and postmenopausal women in Croatia

Body composition in women changes during life due to many factors including hormonal changes associated with menopause. The aim of this study was to examine association of dietary and life style habits with body composition in pre and postmenopausal women in Croatia. Measurement of body composition included body weight, height, waist to hip ratio (WHR) and percentage of body fat (BF) measured by bioelectrical impedance. A specially designed self-administered questionnaire was used to determine menopausal status, physical activity, meal frequency, smoking, consumption of coffee and alcohol. Subjects were 126 postmenopausal women and 123 premenopausal women. As expected, postmenopausal women had significantly higher total BF (40.71± 5.56% vs. 27.26±7.14%), BMI (27.86±4.53 vs. 23.52±3.94 kg/m2) and WHR (0.85±0.08 vs. 0.77±0.06) than did premenopausal women (p<0.001). Women in postmenopause have more meals per day (3.50 ±0.90) than women in premenopause (3.11± 0.93) (p<0.05). Meal frequency was found to be inversely associated with BMI in postmenopausal women (r=-0.185). Multiple regression analysis indicated that menopausal status and life style variables can explain 25% of the BMI variance (R=0.49 ; F=9.93 ; p<0.001). However, separate analyses for the two particular groups have shown that life style variables did not predict BMI in premenopausal women (R=0.19 ; F=1.08, p=0.37), but did predict body composition in postmenopausal examinees (R=0.30 ; F=3.01 ; p=0.02). Physical activity and daily meal frequency were shown to be independent predictors of BMI in the latter group (β =0.302 and β =-0.267 respectively) indicating that higher level of physical activity and lower daily meal frequency favourably affect BMI.
