Mass Concentrations of PAHs in the Air in an Industrial Area
This paper presents an analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) measured in PM10 particles collected in a small industrial town with various production industries. The purpose of the investigation was to see how these industries influenced daily and seasonal variations of mass concentrations of PAHs, as measured in 2009. PM10 particles were collected with a high volume sampler from about 100 m3 of air . Samples were collected on quartz filters over 24-hour cycles. PAHs were analyzed using a Varian Pro Star high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) with a fluorescence detector. Samples were analyzed for the following PAHs: fluoranthene (Flu), pyrene (Pyr), benzo(a)anthracene (BaAnt), chrysene (Chry), benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF), benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), benzo(ghi)perylene B(ghi)P, and indeno(1, 2, 3-cd)pyrene (Ind). Average annual PM10 mass concentration was 42.1 µ/m3 and ranged from 7.9 to 152.6 µg/m3. Annual average BaP mass concentration was 1.005 ng/m3 and ranged from 0.017 ng/m3 to 20.856 ng/m3. The highest concentrations of all PAHs were measured in winter and lower in summer. The average winter BaP concentration was 3.018 ng/m3 while it was 0.116 ng/m3 in summer. Chr and BghiP concentrations were the highest of all PAHs in all seasons.
