What does influence the number of internet banking users in european countries - the multiple regression analysis approach

New information technologies and development of communication networks provided the banks with possibility to organize entirely new approach to banking services market. The development of the Internet enabled banks to do business with each other and with clients wherever they are. This paper focuses the development of Internet banking in 30 European countries based on Eurostat data available for 2008. The multiple regression analysis of the development of Internet banking is defined as number of individuals who are using the Internet for Internet banking as a percentage of individuals aged 16 to 74 within the last 3 months before the survey in 2008 for the purpose of electronic transactions with a bank for payment etc. (number of Internet banking users), as the dependent variable, regressed by gross domestic product per capita in PPS, total intramural R&D expenditure by sector of performance (higher education) and source of funds (all sectors), individuals' level of computer skills (basic level), and public expenditure on education was conducted. Multiple linear regression analysis results indicate that the level of economic development of countries influence the number of users of internet banking. Among regressors used, only GDP per capita in PPS and total intramural R&D expenditure on higher education appeared to be statistically significant, even though other variables seem to be important, too. Applying multivariate analysis approach, concerning all five variables and 30 countries, clear five clusters of countries are formed.

Internet banking; Multiple regression analysis; GDPpc in PPS; Total intramural R&D expenditure by sector of performance (higher education); Principal components analysis; Cluster analysis
